Finding Your Target Audience
Before you can market your art, you’ll need to know WHO you are marketing to. This is a very important step in the marketing process and should not be overlooked.
So what exactly is a ‘Target Audience”? It is a group of people who are your perfect customers. They fit your vision of who will buy your art. It can be easy to rush this step and simply think, “my ideal customer is someone with lots of money to spend and loves my art”. Although true, try to be specific when listing attributes for your target audience.
Here are some steps that you can take to determine your target audience:
Identify your style: Start by identifying your artistic style and genre. This will help you determine who your audience is, as different styles and genres will appeal to different people.
Research your competition: Look at other artists who are producing similar work to you and examine who their audience is. This will give you a good idea of what demographic you are competing for and what type of people you should be targeting.
Analyze your current audience: If you have already sold artwork or exhibited in galleries, examine who your current audience is. Look at the demographics of your buyers and collectors, such as their age range, gender, income level, and geographic location.
Use social media insights: If you have a social media presence, use the insights provided by the platform to analyze your audience. You can examine the age, gender, and location of your followers, as well as their interests and engagement with your posts.
Conduct surveys: Consider conducting surveys or focus groups to gather more specific information about your audience. You can ask questions about their interests, preferences, and purchasing behavior, which will help you tailor your marketing efforts to meet their needs.
Consider your goals: Think about your goals as an artist and what you want to achieve with your work. Are you looking to make a name for yourself in the art world or are you looking to create art for a particular market, such as home decor or office spaces? This will help you determine who your target audience should be.
By taking these steps, artists can determine their target audience and create marketing strategies that effectively reach and engage this demographic. It's important to remember that a target audience can evolve over time, so it's important to regularly re-evaluate and adjust your marketing efforts accordingly.
